A New Chapter for Charles Double Reed Company

After more than four decades serving the double reed community, we’re beginning an exciting new chapter — one that honors our past while shaping a more focused future.

First, the most important thing: Charles Double Reed Company is not closing. We’re moving from Central New Hampshire, to Kingston, NY, just north of New York City.

After 44 years in business, we’re refining our focus to the heart of our work — expert craftsmanship, personal service, and meaningful one-on-one relationships.

What’s Changing

Between now and December 2025, we’ll be phasing out and selling off our entire retail inventory of double reed supplies, accessories, books, and related materials.

Beginning in January 2026, Charles Double Reed Company will focus exclusively on:

– Oboe and bassoon repair and restoration
– Instrument consignments
– New and used instrument sales
– Appraisal services

A Personal Note

After 30 wonderful years in northern New Hampshire, my wife Sarah and I are relocating to the Hudson Valley region of New York. We’re excited to be closer to New York City and part of its vibrant arts and music scene.

This transition moves us from a large retail business to a more intimate, workshop-based practice. It gives us the freedom to focus fully on the precision and care that each instrument deserves — and to nurture the personal relationships that have always been at the heart of Charles Double Reed Company.

With Appreciation

Many of you know Jennifer, our wonderful manager of 25 years. She will play an important role during this transition and will remain in New Hampshire, where she has bright opportunities ahead. We’ll miss her dearly and are profoundly grateful for her dedication and help through this change.

With Deep Gratitude

When I started this company in 1983, I never imagined the incredible journey it would become — or the friendships and collaborations that would grow from it.

Your trust, loyalty, and shared passion for double reeds have made it all possible. We look forward to continuing to serve you in a more focused, personal, and craft-centered way — with the same care, craftsmanship, and connection that have always guided our work.

With warmest regards,

Brian Charles
