Description

Condition: Excellent
Suitable for: Everyone

This Loree English horn has some very interesting characteristics including a left thumb low B key and its manufacture as a thin wall instrument. It plays with great depth and color in the tone and sounds lyrical throughout.

Brian Charles cleaned, oiled, adjusted, and play-tested this English horn here in our shop and it’s ready to play.

The grenadilla wood body had a top joint surface crack long ago which was pinned professionally and seems stable and well done. Someone tried getting a stuck swab out of this instrument, and there are scratches present on the inner bore. It does not appear to make a noticeable difference in intonation, tone, or consistency, but should be considered.

The full conservatory, full plateau silver plated keywork system is clean, shiny, and in excellent condition. It has very good condition pads throughout.

This English horn features the somewhat rare left thumb low B key. The key is located on the obverse of the top joint, below the octave key. To play low B, simply press the key with your left thumb while playing in the usual way. It also has the expected left-hand F, F resonance key, banana key, split d, and both trill keys.

It is without the articulated C#. Based on the information from Peter Hurd, one of our most important and knowledgeable oboe resources, this and other characteristics indicate it was made in approximately 1913-1914. Peter really likes the pre-war thin wall Loree English horns and owns a few of these himself.

Includes a Loree #3 bocal.

The Loree hard shell double case and fitted shearling lined cover are in good condition. There is a slight odor of age, as might be expected.
