These are the most often required orchestral audition excerpts for oboe. They have been selected and annotated by John Ferrillo, former principal oboe, Boston Symphony Orchestra. The separate piano accompaniment reductions have been created to replicate the environment under which you will most likely encounter these required excerpts in a professional audition setting.
For those auditioning, or meeting the challenge of a new piece, the very helpful commentary on each excerpt and sections on preparing and taking auditions, exercises and performance practice techniques are among the most helpful guidance we’ve ever seen.
The separate book of piano reductions by Martha Rearick is written to accompany the oboe parts. The piano parts are structured to replicate the orchestral “environment” in which these excerpts exist. The piano parts require minimal practice. The goal is to provide a rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic foundation for these orchestral oboe solos.
