Can the oboe play music written for other instruments?

The oboe is pitched in C, and the music is written in the treble clef. It shares these traits with flute and violin. Music for clarinet, sax, trumpet and others are written in a different key, usually Bb. While an oboist can play this music, it won’t sound good unless they transpose the music, which means to rewrite it in a different key.
